Here are five main uses of the modal verb may.

1. We use may to express a possibility.

  • Zak may have the key.

  • It may rain later today.

  • You may see birds in the trees.

  • Paula may call him before lunch.

  • This process may take a while to complete.

  • They may ask about it during the meeting tomorrow.

 

2. We use may to make a request or ask for permission.

5. We use may in a formal way to express wishes and hopes.

  • May your baby grow up healthy and happy.
